Fervor
Fervor is a measure of how righteous adherents believe that a faith is and ranges from 0% to 100%. Fervor determines how expensive it is for rulers to create new faiths and how likely counties and characters are to convert.
Fervor increases at a rate of +0.3 each month, modified by the virtues and sins of religious leaders, particularly the head of faith. Fervor grows more slowly for faiths followed in more than 20 counties. New faiths start at 100% fervor, while historical ones start at 50%. A faith without a head of faith will gain +50 Fervor if the head of faith title is created.
At below 40% Fervor, Heresies can happen, with the chance increasing every 10% below that. When the outbreak occurs, each ruler that embraces the heresy will add 15% fervor to the religion they are defecting from.
Fervor is modified by the Holy War casus belli. Attackers in holy wars lose fervor, while defenders gain fervor.
Conversion
Each character can convert to a different faith at any point. To do so, click on the Faith button on the bottom left corner of the screen (between the House and Culture buttons) and select the desired Faith from the Other Faiths menu.
Conversion costs piety based on the difference between the doctrines of the new faith and the doctrines of the old one. The cost can also be affected by the following:
- −1% per Learning attribute of character
- −15% if old faith has Pluralistic doctrine
- −20% if holding Stonehenge special building in Salisbury
- −25% if both old faith and new faith has Pluralistic doctrine
- −25% if converting to the faith of a concubine
- −35% if converting to an existing faith
- −50% if converting to an existing faith within the same religion
- −50% if converting to the faith of a spouse
- −50% if converting to the faith of an attacker in a Holy War
- −50% if character's dynasty has 3 legacies in the Adventure tree
- −75% if character has the Apostate lifestyle perk
- −150% if the new faith exists in the realm or a neighboring realm and same religious family
- −225% if converting to an organized faith from an unreformed faith
- −225% if converting to the faith of a concubine while old faith is unreformed
- −250% if converting to the faith of a spouse while old faith is unreformed
- −250% if converting to the faith of an attacker in a Holy War while old faith is unreformed
- −250% if the new faith exists in the realm or a neighboring realm and different religious family
- +25% if the new faith is unreformed while having clan government
- +50% if the new faith is unreformed while having feudal government
- +75% if the new faith is unreformed while having republican government
- +100% if the new faith belongs to a different religion within the same religious family
- +200% if the new faith belongs to a different religious family
- +500% if the new faith is unreformed while the old faith is organized
- +500% if the new faith's religion is dead
New faiths
A ruler who is at peace can create a new faith for a religion once per lifetime by spending a very large amount of piety. The farther the new faith's tenets will be from the character's original faith, the more piety it will cost to change it. Once a new faith is created, the ruler, their close family and their realm capital will instantly convert. Vassals may convert depending on their opinion and difference in learning. New faiths inherit the holy sites of the original faith.
A ruler who is a vassal cannot create a new faith unless their primary title rank is at least duke.
A new faith cannot have both its tenets and doctrines entirely identical to those of an existing faith.
Reformation
Faiths that are unreformed can be reformed by a ruler who controls at least 3 holy sites by spending a large amount of piety. Upon reformation, the new faith will keep the name of the old faith while the old faith will be renamed.
When reforming their faith, AI rulers will never change tenets or doctrines except possibly for those regarding the head of faith.

Christianity
Christian faiths have the special doctrine Teachings of Jesus, which makes them treat faiths with the Christian Syncretism tenet as hostile instead of evil, and neutralizes opinion penalties with them. Some of them also have the Ecumenism main doctrine, which treats faiths with the same doctrine as astray instead of hostile.

Islam
Muslim faiths have the special doctrine Teachings of the Prophet, which makes them treat faiths with the Islamic Syncretism tenet hostile instead of evil, and neutralizes opinion penalties with them. They also have the main doctrine Muhammad's Succession, which divides them into the Sunni, Shia, Muhakkima and Zandaqa sub-groups. Members of sub-groups largely treat each other as astray instead of hostile; only the Zandaqa group still treats others as hostile, but will also get +5 advantage against co-religionists. Some Muslim faiths don't have access to the Undertake the Hajj decision.

Dualism
Dualist faiths have a special doctrine "Gnosticism", inheritable by new faiths, which makes them treat faiths with the Gnosticism doctrine or tenet as Righteous, as well as applying all other effects of the "Gnosticism" tenet. In both start dates Manicheanism is the only dualist faith remaining. However, dualist faiths can pop up rarely as heresies of other Abrahamic religions. Mandeaism, Priscillianism, and Cainitism are possible Christian heresies. Manicheanism, Sabianism, and Valentianism are possible Muslim heresies. Sethianism is a possible Jewish heresy.
